It is always interesting to see how themes present themselves as we photograph and list our auctions -sometimes without our noticing. In this early spring auction, it turns out we had a lot of consignors with chairs! Early on, we have some fabulous contemporary examples. The Emeco Hudson chairs are a marvel of spare, functional design. The original Emeco chairs were made in the mid 20th century for the American navy. They were ideal for their intended purpose as light, durable, seaworthy chairs. The Hudson chair was conceived from a collaboration between Emeco and the American designer Philip Starck. Described by Starck as “washing the details from the Navy chair”, the Hudson chair was designed for the Hudson Hotel in NYC, and has a place of pride in MOMA’s permanent collection from scrap aluminum to the brightly coloured recycled plastic chairs they are producing today, they were and remain an innovative forward thinking company, producing collectible furniture, designed for sustainability. Our set of six tulip style chairs, in the manner of Saarinen, rocked the chair design world when they were first introduced in the 1950’s. The world’s first one legged chair, their curved lines were designed to echo the curves of the human body. These highly polished, bright white, fiberglass chairs with their  candy red cushions, would be the perfect addition to any mid century home’s decor – and the perfect accent to these dining chairs would be our red “Gel B” acrylic side chairs. Made in Italy, for Domitalia, they are heavy acrylic on tubular metal frames.

In keeping with Visbids’ reputation for eclectic selections, we also have a number of interesting and unusual antique chairs. Our antique Chinese yoke back chairs are also known as “Official Hat” chairs, due to their resemblance to the wing-like, brimmed hats that Chinese officials  wore during the Ming dynasty. In original, unrestored condition, with each back splat carved with traditional Chinese motifs, these are large, solid chairs, designed to be used.

For the sheer novelty, it is hard to beat our 1930’s dental chair. Made of white enameled cast iron, with fully restored chrome accessories, it is a fine example of the innovative mechanical engineering of the early 20th century. Completely adjustable, from the height of the seat, to the incline of the back, to the head rest, it may not be the most comfortable chair in your living room, but it will be the most talked  about! Combine it with our steer horn, cowhide covered chair, and you’ve got yourself a very unique seating arrangement….

For anyone looking for exotic decor for your home, we have a number of items from Africa, including some unusual polychromed carvings, and wooden masks. A highlight is the Yoruba beaded ceremonial head dress or crown. From Nigeria, and traditionally worn by the king, or oba in public ceremonies, they were  heavily embellished with symbolic designs. The beaded “veil” separated the divine king from the mortals. A fabulous example of intricate beadwork, with faces and a removable beaded bird crowning the top, it is fabric lined, on a custom built metal display stand.

It is hard to believe it is spring, with summer days spent on the deck just around the corner! If you have a need for new patio furniture and garden accessories, we have an extensive collection of vintage and new items. For comfort, our high quality swivel, rocking deck chairs are just the answer. Made of faux wicker, with metal frames, they come with indoor/outdoor upholstered cushions. The zippered covers are removable for easy cleaning. Along with glass topped coffee and side tables, as well as a smoker, we’ve got your backyard entertaining covered. For a more vintage vibe, we have cast iron and metal garden benches, tables and chairs, teak loungers, as well as cast iron, concrete and pottery planters. Our dramatic copper and metal outdoor light fixtures would make the perfect finishing touch.
